Witness (to a scream)

about

The recording session at Cargo would have been booked and arranged by Marcus Featherby from Paragon Records. Marcus had funded the recording and release of In The Nursery’s debut mini LP ‘When Cherished Dreams Come True’ in early 1983.

The 2 tracks were recorded over 2 days at Cargo in early September 1983 (probably 3rd/4th) - Klive vividly remembers recording his vocals for the end section in the corridor, with the microphone positioned at the far end.
The band also brought along some recently acquired vintage tubular bells, recorded for key melodies in the track ‘Witness (to a Scream), but since realised that as the set were of the marching variety, and tuned to B flat, they sound slightly discordant!

The track also featured the studio’s infamous bar chimes, erroneously claimed to have been used on Joy Divisions ‘Atmosphere’.

ITN were really pleased with the results at Cargo - it was a great place to experiment and try out new ideas. They managed to capture their live sound and also what they wanted to achieve in their head.

Production of the single was problematic - the sleeve was not printed correctly (see PDFs for the original intention) and the initial 1,000 copies (now highly collectable) were badly pressed, including a review copy sent to John Peel that was also scratched. John played the track but had to take the vinyl off half-way through the live broadcast.

Great memories.
