Crusaders of Space (1939)

by In The Nursery

Crusaders of Space was a futuristic amateur film made by the Derby & Parkhead Ciné Societies on 9.5mm film between 1937-1939. It deals with life in the year 1980, concerning a scientist who sets off for the moon in a space ship.
Intended as a full-length film, production was halted with the onset of WW2 and only this 9 minute version exists.
Nigel & Klive Humberstone added a soundtrack to the film which features (and was filmed by) their father Arthur Humberstone.
Crusaders of Space was screened only once at Sensoria 2014.

Thanks to members of the Derby & Parkhead Ciné Societies who helped make this film.

Arthur Humberstone - producer, cameraman & actor
Miss Pamela Beeson played the part of the heroine Katina in an early version.
Part of the scientist was taken by Mr Kenneth Knee
Miss Beryl Tompkins played the role of Nanette.
Honorary secretary Miss Mary Humberstone

Arthur Humberstone set up the Derby-based Regal Amateur Ciné Society in 1935 along with a number of fellow film enthusiasts.
Film unit No. 1 were assigned Crusaders of Space, a futuristic story written specially by Leonard Waller for the Society, and filming started for the ambitious full-length film in March 1937.

Production and filming was moved to the Parkhead Ciné Society in Sheffield where enthusiastic Society members designed a "World Council Chamber" for some of the scenes.

Maybe it was too ambitious. The film came to a halt. Added to the technical trouble the film lost it's leading lady (Pamela Beeson) who went to London to study at a school of dramatic art.

Filmed on location in Sheffield, Skegness & Derby
